ROME, Oct 01 (APP): President Asif Ali Zardari flew back home Thursday afternoon at the conclusion of his three day official visit to Italy during which he held meetings with Italian President Giorgio Napolitano, Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, Speaker National Assembly Gian Franco Fani, Pope Benedict XVI and addressed an Investment Conference. The President was seen off at the Ciampino International Airport by Italian Chief of Protocol, officials of the Italian Foreign Ministry, Pakistan's ambassador in Italy Ms Tasnim Aslam and ambassador in Switzerland Ayesha Riaz and other senior officials of the embassy. Hectic schedule of President Zardari during his stay comprised back to back interactions and meetings with top Italian leadership, business giants and leading investors. The President wrapped up his visit with the signing of an MoU for cooperation in the defence sector and call to businessmen and entrepreneurs to invest in Pakistan that led to the announcement by the Prime Minister to personally lead a delegation of leading investors to visit the country this year. Salient features of the visit also included identification of key areas of cooperation, commitment by Rome to support Pakistan's efforts for access to EU market and understanding on vocational training of workers from Pakistan. Investment Colloquium, organized at the Italy's Foreign Ministry, was attended by leading investors, business tycoons and prominent industrialists. They were given presentation on the hospitable investment climate and slew of opportunities for foreign investment along with extensive details of enormous untapped potentials in different sectors of the economy. In a key message, the President conveyed to the Italian leadership and through them to the Europe that their help and support to Pakistan in its fight against militancy was direly required. It was critical to take into account the impact of militancy on a nation while considering access to market, the President pleaded adding, the present criterion of a nation's development status alone determining the access to market needed to be revisited. With the identification of the areas for augmented cooperation, the President said that Pakistan looked forward to cooperation in agriculture, marble quarrying and dressing, edible oil, leather, export of semiskilled and unskilled manpower and technology. The call for marble quarrying and dressing technology cut a resonant cord with the hosts when the President invited their attention to the grievous sufferings of the people of Swat and Buner due to militancy and said that the area was the home of the largest marble mines and gems that were destroyed by the militants. Chief Executive of ENI an Italian oil giant, Mr Scaroni Paulo during his call on the President said that his company was keen to expand its operations to explore further avenues of investment in oil and gas in Pakistan. Allying the fears in the west of mistreatment of minorities, the President declared that steps were being taken to ensure that the blasphemy was not misused by religious zealot or for personal vendetta. The President also unveiled plans for the setting up of a federal interfaith complex besides establishing interfaith harmony committees in all districts of the country and hot line in the Minorities Affairs Ministry to instantly take up complaints of the members of minority community against incidents of victimization.
