The Prime Minister is a British film from 1941 directed by Thorold Dickinson. It details the life and times of Benjamin Disraeli, who became Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, and stars John Gielgud, Diana Wynyard, Fay Compton and Stephen Murray.
WWII propaganda film akin to Young Mr. Pitt, The (1942) with Disraeli meant to represent Winston Churchill. The scene in which Disraeli observes Victoria receiving the news that she is now queen is based on an 1880 painting by Henry Tamworth Wells.
Disraeli's supposed first glimpse of the Queen is based on a famous Victorian painting entitled "Victoria Greeted as Queen".
The three Sheridan sisters (Glynis Johns, Andrea Troubridge and Margaret Johnston (I)) do not appear in the American released print (as shown on the Turner Classic Movies channel). Perhaps they are in the British version which ran 15-20 minutes longer..
Plans to film a separate version of the film for American audiences were cancelled when Warner Bros. were so pleased with the film made for British audiences. It was simply edited for the USA release.
Although there is an onscreen copyright statement in the print, there is no record of it in the copyright registry.
This film had its U. S. television premiere on Turner Classic Movies on 24 September 2007 during TCM's festival of films made by Warner Brothers at Teddington Studios in the UK.
