Brown began his professional music career in 1953, and rose to fame during the late 1950s and early 1960s on the strength of his thrilling live performances and string of smash hits. In spite of various personal problems and setbacks he continued to score hits in every decade through to the 1980s. In addition to his acclaim in music, Brown was a presence in American political affairs during the 1960s and 1970s, noted especially for his activism on behalf of fellow _African Americans and the poor. During the early 1980s, Brown's music helped to shape the rhythms of early hip-hop music, with many groups looping or sampling his funk grooves and turning them into what became hip hop classics and the foundations of this music genre.

Brown was recognized by a plethora of (mostly self-bestowed) titles, including Soul Brother Number One, Sex Machine, Mr. Dynamite, The Hardest Working Man in Show Business, Minister of The New New Super Heavy Funk, Mr. Please Please Please, The Boss, and the best-known, the Godfather of Soul.

James Brown (September 11, 1766 - April 7, 1835) was a lawyer, U.S. Senator from Louisiana and Minister to France. He was the brother of John Brown, the cousin of John Breckinridge, James Breckinridge and Francis Preston, the brother-in-law of Henry Clay, the uncle of James Brown Clay, Henry Clay, Jr., John Morrison Clay, the great uncle of B. Gratz Brown and the cousin-in-law of Thomas Hart Benton.

Born near Staunton, Virginia, Brown attended Washington College (later Washington and Lee University) in Lexington, Virginia, and William and Mary College, Williamsburg, Virginia. He studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Frankfort, Kentucky. Brown commanded a company of sharpshooters in an expedition against the Indians in 1789.

He served as secretary to the Governor in 1792. Soon after the cession of the Territory of Louisiana, Brown moved to New Orleans and was appointed as secretary of the Territory in 1804. Brown subsequently became United States district attorney for the Territory.

Brown was elected as a Democratic Republican to the United States Senate on December 1, 1812, to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Jean N. Destréhan, and served from February 5, 1813, to March 3, 1817. He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection, but again elected to the United States Senate in 1819, as an Adams-Clay Republican. He served from March 4, 1819, until December 10, 1823, when he resigned. During his tenure, Brown was the chairman, Committee on Foreign Relations (Sixteenth Congress).

Brown was appointed United States Minister to France 1823-1829.

Brown returned to the United States and settled in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he died.

Educated at Annbank Public School, he was Secretary of the Ayrshire Miners and of the Scottish Miners' National Union. He unsuccessfully contested North Ayrshire in 1910 and was Member of Parliament for South Ayrshire from 1918-1931 and from 1935 until his death.

He was awarded the OBE in 1917, appointed a Privy Counsellor in 1930. He was Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in 1924, 1930 and 1931.

He was granted the Freedom of the Royal Burgh of Ayr in 1930, and of Girvan in 1931 and was awarded an Honorary LLD by the University of Glasgow in 1931. He was a Deputy Lieutenant of Ayrshire.

James Brown (born 3 January, 1987 in Cramlington) is a professional footballer who currently plays as a striker for Hartlepool United in League One.

James Brown joined the Hartlepool youth set-up from Cramlington Juniors football Club. However, he joined too late to go through the Youth Scholarship system and was subsequently offered a temporary deal. He was part of Hartlepool’s under 19s side that won the Dallas Cup. James Brown was included on the substitutes bench for Hartlepool’s match against Bournemouth on the last day of the 2004-05 season. He was expected to play a part in the Hartlepool’s 2005-06 campaign and participated regularly during pre-season.

However during pre-season, James Brown broke his leg against Hibernian and has been unable to make his breakthrough. During the 2006-07 campaign, he played nearly all of Hartlepool's games on the right wing.

The young striker missed out on the majority of the 2005-06 season after suffering ligament damage in a pre-season friendly game but he finished the campaign strongly. James's finishing earned him his first professional contract with the Club in 2006.

Jeff Stelling of Sky Sports, a Hartlepool fan, has been known to exclaim "I feel good!" when Brown scores for Hartlepool, a reference to the more famous James Brown's "I Got You (I Feel Good)".

James Brown (October 14 1828 - April 24 1897) was an Ontario businessman and politician. He represented Hastings West in the Canadian House of Commons as a Conservative member from 1867 to 1882.

He was born in Scotland in 1828 (1826 in some sources). He was an owner of a company which manufactured iron agricultural implements in Belleville and vice-president of the Belleville and North Hastings Railway. Brown was a lieutenant-colonel in the local militia, served as mayor of Belleville in 1862 and 1863 and was also reeve for Hastings.

Brown was born in Acton, Massachusetts. He and Charles Coffin Little, both former clerks, became partners in a Boston bookstore.

James Brown (born September 24, 1931) is a former Scottish first class cricketer. He played as a wicketkeeper and took a record 119 catches and 40 stumpings for them. In first class cricket his tally of 105 is easily the most by a cricketer for Scotland.

He played club cricket with Perthshire and took 674 dismissals.

James Brown (September 6 1790 - April 18 1870) was a Scottish-born farmer, educator and politician in New Brunswick. He represented Charlotte County in the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick from 1830 to 1850, from 1854 to 1856 and from 1857 to 1861.

He was born near Dundee, the son of James Brown and Janet Douglas, and was educated in Scotland. He immigrated to St. Andrews, New Brunswick in 1810. He bought land at nearby Tower Hill in Charlotte County. Brown farmed and taught school. In 1817, he married Sarah Sharman. He ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the provincial assembly in 1827. In 1838, he was named government supervisor for the road between Fredericton and St. Andrews. Brown married Catherine Gillespie (née Cameron) in 1842 after the death of his first wife.

In 1844, Brown, with Sylvester Zobieski Earle and John Gregory, was tasked with preparing a report describing the state of schools in the province. In 1854, he helped prepare another study which resulted in the creation of the University of New Brunswick to replace King's College at Fredericton. Brown was defeated in the 1850 general election but was then named to the province's Legislative Council. He resigned his seat on the council in 1854 and was elected to a seat in the legislative assembly. Brown served on the province's Executive Council as Surveyor General and then was a member of the Board of Works. He resigned in 1856, was reelected in 1857 and again served as Surveyor General.

After Brown was defeated in 1861, he was named an emigrant agent and went to Britain to promote immigration to the province. Brown was opposed to Confederation and ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the assembly in 1864. He died at his home at Tower Hill at the age of 79.
