Before becoming an actor, as a young teen, he fought in the Spanish-American War at eighteen and caught yellow fever. The price for it was losing his hair. After losing his hair at a young age, he became a character actor.
For his work in movies, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
On British and Australian stage before coming to the USA in 1912, he played more than 800 roles, starting with Sir Henry Irving at age 8. He first appeared in the US at Castle Square Theatre, Boston, in 1912, and made his New York debut in 1917 in "Going Up".
