Australian Labor Party (Wikipedia.org)

The Australian Labor Party is an Australian political party.

Known as the ALP for short, the party is the current governing party of Australia. Kevin Rudd is the party's federal parliamentary leader and Prime Minister of Australia. As of the 2007 federal election, the party is in government nationally, as well as in all eight state and territory legislatures, the first time a single party has achieved this.

Founded in 1891 by the emerging labour movement in Australia, Labor is the country's oldest federally active political party, having contested seats at the 1901 federal election following the federation of Australia. The party competes primarily with the Liberal/National coalition for political office, particularly at the federal and state levels.
